CAS Blog - Outdoor Campfire - April 2021 - Activity - LO5

Image
John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS April 10th, 2021 Outdoor Campfire - Activity - LO5     Since I have had both of my Covid-19 vaccines, I decided to have a small outdoor gathering with some of my other vaccinated friends. I have been wanting to have an outside firepit for a very long time, and it's something that really helps me connect with people.  -Now of course, since most of us haven't had a fire outside in a long time, we worked collaboratively to make sure that this fire was safe, warm, and long-lasting. To conclude, my friends and I had a great time with our outdoor firepit, and working together made it even more of a success.

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS March 21st, 2021 CAS Blog 5 - Service - Learning Outcome 5     On March 21st, 2021, I got my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. For this year, this was one of the great ways that I got to serve my local community. I, fortunately, was one of the few people in my age group that could actually attain one. I found that Not only am I helping myself, but I am also playing my part in the reduction of the SARS-COV-2 virus. I got this inoculation with my sister, who I am very close to. My sister and I both put our effort into lessening an issue of global significance, the Covid-19 pandemic. I am extremely happy that we had the eligibility and opportunity to participate in this global effort.

CAS Blog - February 2021 - Winter Storm Freeze and Helping Neighbors - Service - LO6

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS February 15th, 2021 Winter Storm Freeze and Helping my Neighbors On February 15th, 2021, an unusual and very strong winter storm hit Texas. The most affected areas (in terms of damage) were near the coast, and a majority of the residential buildings here in Galveston, TX  are not at all built for extreme freezing weather. Personally, my family and I had no power for 5 days, and no water for four days. Through this, I found two global issues that were very prominent during this time; access to electricity, and access to water. Fortunately, my family had stocked up on water, had non-perishable food, and a generator. So although my family did have some very limited access to both resources, there was still a lack of both. However, while my family was getting by in this situation, my neighbors across the street did not have any water to drink. Luckily, my family and I had an unopened five-gallon jug of purified water, and we decided to give it to them. They w...

CAS Blog - February 2021 - Fishing in Galveston - Activity - LO1

Image
John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS February 6th, 2021 Fishing in Galveston - Activity - LO1     On a beautiful Galveston Saturday morning, I went fishing in a spot near my house. The wind wasn't too strong, the sun was out, and I hadn't been fishing in a long time. During this time, the fish inside the inlet I was fishing in were not very diverse, and I used a lot of energy trying to catch any large fish such as groupers. To no avail, I didn't get any of the fish that I hoped for, but I did end up catching something rather scary-looking. -This is a ribbonfish. Not only are they decently hard to catch, but they are also very stubborn fish in general. -Eventually, I was able to throw the fish back into the body of water, but it was most definitely tiring. To conclude, I strengthened my fishing abilities, and through the introduction of new marine life, I was able to grow my knowledge more-so on fishing.

CAS Blog - Oil Painting - January 2021 - Creativity - LO1

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS January 25th, 2021 CAS Blog - Oil Painting - Creativity - LO1     On January 25th, I decided to try out oil painting for the first time! For all of my life, I have always seen my father produce many oil paintings, but I had never created any entirely on my own. Luckily, my father gifted them to me over Christmas 2020, and I was able to channel my creative energy into something completely new. -In this picture, I am just learning how to mix oil paints, add additional oil for lighter colors, and what brushes to use.  -The painting I am working on is actually based off of a picture that I took on the beach. The picture I used is also very similar to other posts that I have made. Overall, I found a new medium in visual art to help grow my capabilities in this field. Not only did I have a great time painting, but I also now know greater knowledge about oil paints and other strategies found in this activity.

CAS Blog - December 2020 - Senior Pictures - Creativity - LO3

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS December 17th, 2020 CAS Blog December 2020 - Creativity - Learning Outcome 3     Since I'm ending the first semester of my senior year, and everybody in the twelfth grade is required to send in pictures as "Senior Pictures", I wanted to make it a fun and creative experience! Previous to going to take my pictures, I thought about how I didn't want to only take pictures on the beach, as that was something that I do very often. So to plan this experience with quality in mind, I did some research on some great places to take pictures in Galveston, Texas.     After a few web searches, I found one place that had a lot of potential for quality photos. It was an abandoned train track and train car! Although this picture wasn't the exact location of where I took the pictures, and even though I didn't include this picture in my senior pictures, I still took this photo for fun to catch the theme that I was going for. Of course, there was access...

CAS Blog - Venus flytrap for my house - Service - LO2

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS December 7th, 2020 Venus flytrap for my house - Service - LO2     Since I live in a rather damp climate in the southern US, there tends to be a medium to a large number of insects present at any given time. Now I have always thought that Venus flytraps were interesting, but I had never considered attaining one until recently. So to help my household with any uninvited guests, I finally got one. I also get to care for another member of our household, and it's not only a plant that is helpful with ridding pests, but it's also a responsibility. -This is a picture of the flytrap. -Additionally, nobody in my house is happy with any pests in the house, so getting this fly trap does a service for my family! To conclude, I have learned the basic and continuous needs and the responsibility that come with owning this type of plant. Additionally, these implications also happen to be the challenges! Finally, Not only has my knowledge on this new household additi...
