CAS Blog December 2020 - Creativity - Learning Outcome 3


    Since I'm ending the first semester of my senior year, and everybody in the twelfth grade is required to send in pictures as "Senior Pictures", I wanted to make it a fun and creative experience! Previous to going to take my pictures, I thought about how I didn't want to only take pictures on the beach, as that was something that I do very often. So to plan this experience with quality in mind, I did some research on some great places to take pictures in Galveston, Texas.

    After a few web searches, I found one place that had a lot of potential for quality photos. It was an abandoned train track and train car!


Although this picture wasn't the exact location of where I took the pictures, and even though I didn't include this picture in my senior pictures, I still took this photo for fun to catch the theme that I was going for.





Of course, there was access via a public road!


After admiring the surrounding scenery, I trekked over to this abandonded train car, and I found that it was indeed the main attraction of the field.





This is my favorite picture from that day.


To conclude, I have demonstrated how to plan a quite literal field experience, and I had a lot of fun while partaking in this creative activity for my school.

CAS Blog - Oil Painting - January 2021 - Creativity - LO1

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS January 25th, 2021 CAS Blog - Oil Painting - Creativity - LO1     On January 25th, I decided to try out oil painting for the first time! For all of my life, I have always seen my father produce many oil paintings, but I had never created any entirely on my own. Luckily, my father gifted them to me over Christmas 2020, and I was able to channel my creative energy into something completely new. -In this picture, I am just learning how to mix oil paints, add additional oil for lighter colors, and what brushes to use.  -The painting I am working on is actually based off of a picture that I took on the beach. The picture I used is also very similar to other posts that I have made. Overall, I found a new medium in visual art to help grow my capabilities in this field. Not only did I have a great time painting, but I also now know greater knowledge about oil paints and other strategies found in this activity.

CAS Blog - February 2021 - Winter Storm Freeze and Helping Neighbors - Service - LO6

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS February 15th, 2021 Winter Storm Freeze and Helping my Neighbors On February 15th, 2021, an unusual and very strong winter storm hit Texas. The most affected areas (in terms of damage) were near the coast, and a majority of the residential buildings here in Galveston, TX  are not at all built for extreme freezing weather. Personally, my family and I had no power for 5 days, and no water for four days. Through this, I found two global issues that were very prominent during this time; access to electricity, and access to water. Fortunately, my family had stocked up on water, had non-perishable food, and a generator. So although my family did have some very limited access to both resources, there was still a lack of both. However, while my family was getting by in this situation, my neighbors across the street did not have any water to drink.
