John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS January 16th, 2020 Scavenger Hunt in Chinatown - Activity     During our J-Term, we embarked on a plethora of interesting activities that were themed with the Chinese culture. One of the most fun and active portions of this J-term, was the scavenger hunt inside of China town, Houston. We first looked for specific Chinese characters (typically in the names of restaurants) that would help us complete the first part of the challenge. The hardest and second part was asking specific individuals throughout Chinatown about what province in China that they were from, that ended up being pretty fun. Our last and most interesting part of this hunt was going to a Chinese supermarket to find certain brands that correlated with our task.  This is an antique shop near the super market, this was one of the places that we visited for checking people's geographic origins. Overall, it was a very fun day filled with ~3hrs of walking around...

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS Project January 14th, 2020 CAS Project Part 2 - Kung Fu - Creativity- Learning Outcome 7 On our fifth day of the Chinese cultural J-Term, we went to a kung fu workshop. We not only went to participate in the performance of the sacred Chinese martial art, but we also came to learn the history behind it and other attributes that come with Kung Fu. The Kung Fu master of this facility not only told us how to use this art in self-defence but also how we can attain the necessary mindset that falls in line with learning outcome seven. The master told us that this art should only be used in a situation when self-defense is required, and how it isn't ethical to purely attack anyone with Kung Fu. He also remarked on how our discretion in a situation that requires self-defense and using Kung Fu, is really dependant on our and others' choices. I thought that this learning outcome lines up more with the creative mental mindset that you can attain from Kung Fu, hen...

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS January 10th, 2020 Chinese J-Term Project - Part 1 - Service     During our 3rd day in the Chinese Cultural J-Term, my classmates and I went to the Chinese Community Center in Houston. We all made traditional Chinese dumplings (or, 饺子,jiao zi). For this activity, we were told exactly how to make dumplings in traditional fashion, and although it was a slight challenge to get these delicious food items exactly as directed, my classmates and I were extremely committed to making these as traditional as they come. Not only was this activity really fun to participate in, but every classmate gave each other a service by making them food, and every classmate showed commitment and perseverance through the culinary traditions that we created.
