Chinese J-Term Project - Part 1 - Service

    During our 3rd day in the Chinese Cultural J-Term, my classmates and I went to the Chinese Community Center in Houston. We all made traditional Chinese dumplings (or, 饺子，jiao zi). For this activity, we were told exactly how to make dumplings in traditional fashion, and although it was a slight challenge to get these delicious food items exactly as directed, my classmates and I were extremely committed to making these as traditional as they come. Not only was this activity really fun to participate in, but every classmate gave each other a service by making them food, and every classmate showed commitment and perseverance through the culinary traditions that we created.

Now I have always thought that Venus flytraps were interesting, but I had never considered attaining one until recently. So to help my household with any uninvited guests, I finally got one. CAS Blog - Oil Painting - January 2021 - Creativity - LO1

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS January 25th, 2021 CAS Blog - Oil Painting - Creativity - LO1     On January 25th, I decided to try out oil painting for the first time! For all of my life, I have always seen my father produce many oil paintings, but I had never created any entirely on my own. Luckily, my father gifted them to me over Christmas 2020, and I was able to channel my creative energy into something completely new. -In this picture, I am just learning how to mix oil paints, add additional oil for lighter colors, and what brushes to use.  -The painting I am working on is actually based off of a picture that I took on the beach. The picture I used is also very similar to other posts that I have made. Overall, I found a new medium in visual art to help grow my capabilities in this field. Not only did I have a great time painting, but I also now know greater knowledge about oil paints and other strategies found in this activity.

CAS Blog - February 2021 - Winter Storm Freeze and Helping Neighbors - Service - LO6

John Mazziotti Dr. Lee CAS February 15th, 2021 Winter Storm Freeze and Helping my Neighbors On February 15th, 2021, an unusual and very strong winter storm hit Texas. The most affected areas (in terms of damage) were near the coast, and a majority of the residential buildings here in Galveston, TX  are not at all built for extreme freezing weather. Personally, my family and I had no power for 5 days, and no water for four days. Through this, I found two global issues that were very prominent during this time; access to electricity, and access to water. Fortunately, my family had stocked up on water, had non-perishable food, and a generator. So although my family did have some very limited access to both resources, there was still a lack of both. However, while my family was getting by in this situation, my neighbors across the street did not have any water to drink.
